After you have setup all your categories, you can setup the default categories if you use other modules as well. For example if your authors get a discount when registering for the congress, you can give them a default category. This means that when an author logs in with his username/password, he will automatically get the selected category and sees the discount events you have connected to it.
To set the default categories, please go to the participant dashboard -> module settings -> Welcome tab.

'Registration type determines the category'
Participants can choose a registration type on the 'Free text' page, which automatically assigns them to a category. Make sure to configure the category settings of your registration types.
'Allow category change'
Participants will be able to change their category through a dropdown on the 'Welome screen'.
